Locals left fuming as only 300 deported months after Ceuta mass invasion as Spain left housing up to 10,000 migrants

SPANISH residents of Ceuta have been left fuming as only 307 migrants have reportedly been deported since the huge border crossing from Morocco in July.

It comes as the country’s socialist prime minister announced plans to house up to 10,000 migrants in the city.

Around 80,000 people swam and stormed across the border from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in just 24 hours at the end of July.

The city, with a population of just 84,000 itself, was completely overwhelmed.

With nothing to eat, and nowhere to sleep or defecate apart from on streets or beaches, most left voluntarily in the days after the mass border crossing.

But nearly 10,000 migrants remain, many sleeping in shacks which now cover the city’s beaches.

He told TV show El Intermedio on Tuesday that 6,000 migrants will be housed by the end of this week, adding: “We hope to have stabilised the situation by the end of the year.”

307 migrants have been deported, according to the head of the unified command Ángel Víctor Torres.

More than 5,000 have returned to Morocco voluntarily, he said. The rest are waiting to be processed.

Torres said around 90 per cent of those remaining in the Spanish enclave are from North Africa and will ultimately be sent home.

They must first be processed and will be housed in the government accommodation announced by Sanchez.

It comes after bombshell documents reveal Spanish spies had warned about social media calls for a mass migrant crossing from Morocco the day before tens of thousands charged into Ceuta.

Sánchez insisted that the border breach had been impossible to predict.

But opposition parties claimed the documents prove the government misled the public.

They uncovered a warning given by the country’s National Intelligence Service (CNI) to Moroccan and Ceuta authorities.

Police and central government representation in Ceuta were also warned about the messages.

The report warned that social media groups reaching some 180,000 people were encouraging migrants to cross the following day.

One such message read: “Whoever wants to cross has the last chance on Throne Day [30 July] at 8 the authorities will be distracted with the celebrations and parades.”

At least 100 people died during the crossing.
