Event in Co Sligo celebrating esteemed author John McGahern with discussions on his work and film screening of his last novel

A special event is taking place in the Art Deco, Ballymote on Saturday celebrating the work of the esteemed Leitrim author, John McGahern,

This year marks twenty years since the Leitrim author’s death.

Ballymote’s Art Deco is hosting a celebration of the quiet power of ‘one of Ireland’s most important literary figures’.

Audiences will be able to hear writers and participants discuss how McGahern’s words shape our sense of place, memory and human connection.

There is an opportunity to listen to dramatised passaged from his short stories.

The evening will conclude with the award-winning film adaptation of McGahern’s last novel, That They May Face The Rising Sun.

Speakers include Eamon Maher, Derek Hand, Kathleen Costello-Sullivan, Marie Louise O’Donnell, Alexandra Maclennan, Fr Liam Kelly, Barry Houlihan, Philip Dolan and Pat Collins, director of That They May Face The Rising Sun.

The event in the Art Deco begins at 10:30am with talks continuing until 5pm. (Tickets €15).

The film is from 7:30pm with a discussion from director Pat Collins (tickets €15).
