Offaly County Council has officially signed the contract for the provision of an Architect Led Integrated Design Team Consultancy Service for a new community swimming pool and fitness centre in Edenderry.
A severe fire in 2024 saw the closure of the old Edenderry pool.
Following what the council described as a competitive procurement process, McAdam Design Ltd. has been formally appointed.
This new facility aims to be one of the premier facilities in the region, serving not only counties Offaly, Westmeath, and Kildare but also beyond, providing a state-of-the-art swimming facility at both national and international levels.
The chosen site for the pool is located within the newly developed Blundell masterplan, and the new pool site is to be within a 400m walking distance from the centre of town and key amenity areas.
The site is owned by Offaly County Council having been purchased from the OPW. The regeneration project will deliver a newly constructed, swimming pool serving Edenderry and the wider community.
In consultation with Offaly County Council, McAdam Design Ltd will engage and consult with residents, communities and businesses throughout the design process of the New Swimming Pool over the coming months.
“Signing this contract marks the official start of the design process,” said Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council, Cllr Declan Harvey.
“This project is a substantial investment that will have a lasting impact on Edenderry’s future. The new Community swimming pool will provide high-quality, modern facilities, and greatly enhance the town’s attractiveness as a place to live, work, and visit,” Cllr Harvey stated.
Deputy Chief Executive of Offaly County Council, Mr Andrew Murray, also welcomed the signing of the contract.
“I am delighted to see this contract officially signed, and we will look forward to working with McAdam design Ltd to deliver this project,” he said.
“The allocation of funding as part of the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) is significant in delivering this project, and I would like to acknowledge the support of the Minister, the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, the existing Edenderry Swimming Pool Committee, Offaly County Council Regeneration and Municipal District staff for their efforts with this project to date,” Mr Murray finished.
