BRITS clinging to the lingering rays of summer are wondering if one final heatwave could be on the cards before autumn firmly takes hold.

As mid-September arrives, the weather across the UK is turning distinctly unpredictable.

While an official, multi-day scorcher is unlikely to dominate headlines, forecasts suggest the sunshine may not have completely abandoned us just yet.

Will there be another heatwave?

Unfortunately, a late-season heatwave is off the table for most, but forecasters aren’t ruling out brief bursts of genuinely pleasant weather.

According to the Met Office, temperatures over the coming weeks will likely stay “close to average overall.”

But for those hoping to leave the winter coat in the wardrobe a little longer, meteorologists say there is still “scope for some rather warm days at times.”

What’s the long-range forecast?

From Friday, September 18 through to Sunday, September 27, the Met Office says the UK will experience an early-autumn split driven by low-pressure systems pushing in from the Atlantic Ocean.

The forecaster predicts that weather for the period will remain “changeable, with occasional rain or showers arriving from the North Atlantic.”

These wet and blustery conditions will prove “most frequent across northern and western parts of the UK, where some strong winds will also be possible at times.”

Scotland, Northern Ireland, and parts of northern England can expect regular doses of rain.

If you’re based further south, the outlook is noticeably brighter.

The forecaster says that “there will also be some reasonably dry and more settled periods interspersed, especially across southern areas.”

Further north, the Met Office suggests there is a “chance these may extend to more of the UK later in the period,” offering a potential window of quieter, drier weather across the nation as September winds down.

What is the forecast for October?

Looking further ahead into late September and early autumn, the unsettled pattern looks set to persist.

The Met Office expects conditions to be “most likely remaining changeable, with further spells of rain and showers arriving from the North Atlantic.”

Gusty winds will stay part of the picture, once again staying “most frequent across the north and west.”
