THE Great British Bake off is back on telly next week, inspiring the nation to make cake or, at least, eat cake!
Yet, it’s been found that cake is one of the most wasted food items – usually chucked because it’s not used up in time.

Here’s how to avoid throwing your sponge in the bin and losing cash…
DEEP FREEZE: Cake freezes well especially if it’s not yet been decorated or is a plain sponge.
Wrap it up in cling film or in an airproof tub to avoid it getting freezer burn or moisture seeping in.
A batch of brownies is especially great for freezing, you can put them in the freezer and just pop in the oven when you fancy one.

Or have a go at giving a classic bread and butter pudding a new twist by using slices of cake instead of stale bread.
If you have a slice or two, you could also crumble up and sprinkle over a couple of scoops of ice cream.
POP STOP: Another option is to turn extra cake into cake pops – fun snacks for kids.
Crumble the cake into a bowl, add a little cream so that you can roll into balls that will hold together then leave in fridge to chill.
Melt chocolate and dip a lolly stick in it, then push the stick into the ball – this should help it stay on the stick.
Cover the ball in the melted choc, add sprinkles if you fancy, and let the cake pop set on baking paper in the fridge for 40 minutes.
