New ‘traffic filter’ rule is being rolled out in UK city centre this September – and risks a £70 penalty charge

MOTORISTS have been urged to follow a new “traffic filter” system which is set to be rolled out in a major UK city.

Anyone who fails to comply with the new rule could face a £70 fine from the end of the month.

Oxford’s new Traffic Filters system is set to launch in six city centre locations from Monday, September 28.

The scheme will replace the current £5 temporary congestion charge that is enforced when drivers commute through the affected areas.

Under the new rules, residents without a valid permit will be restricted from passing through six traffic filter points during their operating hours.

Instead of physical barriers, filters will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition tool to issue fines to those who break the rules.

Any motorist that holds a temporary congestion charge permit will generally have their pass transferred to the new system, but some central area permits may be withdrawn during the transition.

Drivers will still be able to reach every part of Oxford penalty-free by simply taking alternative routes around the traffic filters.

The new trial is set to run for up to 18 months, with the six-month consultation period starting when the scheme launches.
