Leeds 4 Newcastle 1: Calvert-Lewin stakes England claim as Daniel Farke’s men run riot to hammer Toon

RED-HOT Leeds smashed Matthias Jaissle’s unbeaten Newcastle record to pieces with an electrifying first-half display.

The Mags were waving the white flag by the break after Lewis Miley’s own-goal before Jayden Bogle and Dominic Calvert-Lewin blew them away.

And Jaissle’s former Red Bull Salzburg star Noah Okafor rubbed more salt in the wounds in the second half to round-off the 4-1 thumping.

German Jaissle’s honeymoon is well and truly over, but compatriot Daniel Farke has Whites fans dreaming of Europe as they climbed into third.

Four matches undefeated. A captain in Ethan Ampadu who continues to grow into a midfield monster. And, most importantly, an England striker in Calvert-Lewin who cannot stop scoring.

Despite the huge summer of change at Newcastle, some things remain the same. And Jaissle will be just as sick of the sight of him as the Toon Army.

But despite several more spectacular ones here, the Czech keeper was powerless to stop the Leeds storm.

The bright lights of Elland Road were always going to be Jaissle’s toughest test yet. Leeds have been formidable here since Farke’s arrival in 2023, suffering just one defeat now in 26 evening league kick offs.

That has earned the nickname “Farke After Dark” amongst Leeds supporters. And on this form, it could be European nights soon.

Jaissle, who confirmed in-form winger Anthony Elanga could be out long-term before kick-off with an unspecified injury, also lost £48m midfielder Nico Gonzalez to a head injury midway through the half.

But their downfall had already begun. Their £51m forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo was lucky to avoid a nightmare debut when he went unpunished for palming the ball away in his own box with less than a minute on the clock.

Hornicek saved his side with a brilliant scoop away from Jayden Bogle’s close-range spin and turn before tipping over the wing-back’s volley.

But Ao Tanaka’s strike first hit Sean Steur – on for Gonzalez – and then Lewis Miley, wrong-footing Hornicek as he stood powerless and watched the ball hit the net.

Moments later it was two and another nightmare for Steur. His underhit pass was pounced on by Bogle.

Within a flash it was worked wide and Calvert-Lewin and Bogle both rose about Sven Botman, the former’s header hitting the latter and going in.

The floodgates were open and Leeds smelt blood. Hornicek’s double save prevented Ampadu and DCL but there was no stopping the hotshot on the stroke of half time.

He sent Botman to the papershop when dragging it back on his right foot before pulling the trigger, the shot taking a slight knick off Malick Thiaw on its way in.

This was the first time Leeds had scored three in the first half of a Premier League game at home since May 2001.

That day they got five against Bradford and they quickly set about adding to their tally following the restart.

It was four with half an hour to go when Newcastle failed to clear a long throw. It dropped for Okafor, and he lashed home a half-volley past the diving Hornicek.

That was the icing on the cake for the Whites and Farke.
