Digital ID set to replace physical proof of age for buying booze at pubs and shops

PUBS and shops will soon be able to accept digital ID as proof of age when buying alcohol.

Punters will be able to use their phone to prove their age instead of showing physical ID at boozers, festivals and concerts.

The new system will be available through apps such as Yoti which is used by young people for age-restricted cinema tickets.

The public will need to scan their face or enter a code on the app which then generates a token such as a QR code which last around 30 seconds to allow verification.

Ministers expect it will take some time for the age ID to be adopted before its scope is extended to tobacco and vape sales.

PM Andy Burnham scrapped a wider digital ID programme that was planned under Sir Keir Starmer.

Digital Government Minister Stephanie Peacock said: “It will remain an individual or business’ choice whether to use or adopt it, and physical ID will remain a valid way for customers to prove their age.

“This groundbreaking change in the law will mean you do not need to carry a physical ID, nor hand over sensitive personal information such as your name or address just to prove your age – allowing everyone to feel safer on a night out.”

Allen Simpson, boss of UKHospitality, said: “The roll-out of the voluntary digital proof of age will provide an easier experience for customers, allowing them to verify their age securely from their phones.”
