A BRITISH supermarket chain is set to become the “first ever high-street brand” to open in the Falkland Islands.
This comes as the President of Argentina vowed to “reclaim” the sovereign British territory.
A new standalone Iceland store is set to open in the capital of the Falkland Islands, with an Iceland spokesperson confirming that “it will become the first-ever high street brand to open” in the territory.
This follows executive chairman Richard Walker’s recent comments stating he was “committed” to opening a site on the sovereign British territory, “taking our iconic British frozen quality and value to the Falklanders”.
Located at Ross Road East, in Stanley, the new site will be launched in partnership with local retailer Kelper Stores – part of the family-run Fortuna group.
Expected to open in early December, the store will feature Iceland‘s own label frozen goods, as well as British brands including Cathedral City and MyProtein.

Richard added: “The Falklands are a special part of the British family and it’s always been an ambition of mine to support it, so being able to bring Iceland to Stanley is a huge moment for us.
“This is an important moment for the business and our international aspirations.
“I will personally be visiting the Falklands to officially open the store and I am looking forward to welcoming our new customers through the door.”
This comes amid recent threats from Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, to capture the sovereign British territory, as proclaimed in a televised speech on September 3.

Yet, the island’s Legislative Assembly, hit back against these comments in a statement: “Our future is a matter for the people who live here to decide.
“That is a right grounded in international law, and it is not altered by the statements of any other government.”
In a 2013 referendum, around 1,513 of the Island’s residents voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory – with 99.8% voting in favour and just three voting against.
More than 3,600 residents now live on the Falkland Islands, the majority of whom are of British descent.
