Van Gerwen, 37, says a clean diet has played a major role in helping him shed the pounds, before joking that his recent divorce had also contributed.

He said on stream: “How much weight did I lose? 28 kilos.

“I used to always eat after the darts when I went back. I used to eat badly all the time. I never do it anymore.

“And guys, to lose weight, very good, very good. I have some very good advice: just divorce. That’s so much stress. Doesn’t matter. Easy.”

The three-time world champion also revealed that he has never been a beer drinker.

Van Gerwen added: “I don’t mind a good glass of wine, guys. I never drink beer in my life. It’s disgusting.

“But a good glass of wine, especially with a nice dinner when you’re with friends and things like that, I think it’s really nice.”

Van Gerwen opened up on the physical demands of life on the professional darts circuit.

The Dutchman spends huge amounts of time travelling around the world for tournaments and believes the impact is often underestimated.

He continued: “When you’re a lot on the road, guys, don’t get me wrong, it costs a lot of energy, a lot of travel time, a lot of waiting time around airports, everywhere.

“Even just calculate the time I stood at the check-in desk at a hotel, things like that. People underestimate my travel.

“In the last two weeks I slept in ten different beds or something. It’s weird sometimes.”

Asked to name the best match he has ever played, Van Gerwen picked his iconic World Championship clash with Raymond van Barneveld.

Mighty Mike defeated his fellow compatriot 6-2 in the 2017 semi-final at Ally Pally before going on to lift the title.

He said: “I think it’s my game against Raymond van Barneveld in the World Championship when I threw a 114 average and Raymond lost with the highest average in the World Championship ever, I think, 109.”

Van Gerwen was quizzed on his favourite callers of a 180.

He revealed: “Two, to be fair. George Noble, because he is a friend of mine, and Russ Bray, because I’ve known them guys for years. They’ve been so good for the sport.”

The 51-time major winner revealed plans for an autobiography about his career have already been discussed.

Van Gerwen disclosed: “They’ve been in contact with me already a few times, but I think it’s too early. My book is going to be very big.”
