The Mags recouped around £228m by selling captain Bruno Guimaraes plus fellow stars Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

While the Brazilian skipper’s £75m exit was unplanned, the £60.6m sale of last season’s top scorer Gordon was critical to the club falling foul of financial regulations.
Tonali’s £92.5m switch to Tottenham helped fund a spending spree for new signings as the Mags forked out £266.6m to bring in eight new recruits, all aged 24 or younger, to transform the squad for new boss Matthias Jaissle.
New CEO David Hopkinson, who ambitiously declared Newcastle want to be “in the debate about being the top club in the world” by 2030, has already brought in additional cash through commercial deals.
Sporting director Ross Wilson says there is also “headroom” for new additions in January if needed, but admits the realities are that Newcastle will have to cash in during future windows too.

He said: “We built a squad for the season. That doesn’t mean we might not make further alterations to it in January.
“If you want to be a successful club in the Premier League you have to trade players and if you don’t the chances are you won’t be a successful club in the Premier League.
“Particularly where the revenues of this club are in a phase where David and his team are making those revenues really, really grow.
“But without that if you don’t trade players you are going to get stuck.”

Despite being issued with a firm hands-off warning this summer, they are still set to launch a move for him next year.
However, Wilson hopes the England international will instead be the next player he convinces to commit his future to the club.
With talks ongoing over a new deal for Hall, Wilson said: “We comment on things like that when they’re done.
“It’s unhelpful to comment otherwise. We confirmed Harvey and Lewis when they were done – that’s the best way for us to operate in this space. It’s not helpful to speculate on these things.

“We hope they’re [star players] with us on our journey to 2030.
“But we’ve got a player trading model as well. Who knows what 2030 looks like in terms of the squad?
“I’m sure there’ll be players in the 2030 squad that aren’t in the 2026/7 squad – I hope there are anyway.
“Of course we want to have players here who are on a journey with us.
