A BARGAIN bakery chain that has been dubbed as “better than Greggs” has suddenly shut five of its stores.
The decision comes a matter of weeks after its sister brand announced it would shut 19 stores due to declining footfall and rising costs.

Poundbakery has unexpectedly axed five of its stores in the last fortnight, only weeks after its sister brand, Sayers Bakery, announced 19 closures.
Shoppers across the North West of England, the Midlands and Yorkshire have been met with customer notice signs when visiting a number of local stores.
Yesterday, the Express & Star reported that shutters had been pulled on both the Wolverhampton and Dudley Poundbakery’s in the Black Country.
Images inside the Wolverhampton store still show a number of branded signs on display, as well as a variety of soft drinks in fridges.

This follows news on Friday last week that a branch in Fleetwood, Lancashire, would also shut, according to the Blackpool Gazette.
On August 27, another two branches in Sheffield and Newcastle-under Lyme shut, according to the Sheffield Star and the Stoke Sentinel.
A “Customer Notice” displayed on the shopfront of the Sheffield location has redirected shoppers to an alternative Chesterfield store, further saying “we apologise for any inconvenience”.
Poundbakery, known for its £1.20 sausage rolls and £2 pasties, is considered to be the largest independent retail baker in the North West of England, listing a total of 37 stores on its website.

Founded in 2010 as a budget alternative for the Sayers brand, the two bakeries later merged as a single corporate entity in 2019.
In August, Sayers Bakery also revealed it would be axing a number of stores, with 19 of its 91 locations earmarked for closure.
The chain, primarily based across the Merseyside area, is yet to confirm which stores will be closed and the exact date it will happen.
