Club Brugge vs Aston Villa preview
It’s been a difficult start to the campaign for Aston Villa following a tumultuous summer.
Six starters from their Europa League-winning starting line-up departed – many to direct rivals – leaving Unai Emery with a major rebuild on his hands.
That rebuild has started in modest fashion, with just a single point collected from their opening three Premier League matches.
The Villans are yet to score, having gone 315 minutes of competitive football without finding the net, and have registered just one shot on target, which came during their goalless draw with Hull on Friday.
Emery hasn’t been helped by injuries, with Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Amadou Onana, Johan Manzambi and Brian Madjo all sidelined.
But the manager remains positive and believes his players are showing incremental improvements after dominating possession and posting an expected goals tally of 1.74 while creating three big chances over the weekend.
Another improvement will be required when his side travel to Belgium tonight, although there are reasons to be cheerful.
The Villans beat Club Brugge 6-1 on aggregate in their 2024-25 Champions League campaign, while the hosts have won just one of their last 17 matches against English opposition in major European competition.
Aston Villa have also won 67% of their Champions League matches under Emery, the second-highest win percentage for a manager with 10 or more games in charge of an English side.
As for Club Brugge, they’ve started the season in good fashion, winning four of their five league matches, all accompanied by clean sheets.
Home comforts should also help. Ivan Leko’s side have lost just three of their last 22 UEFA matches on home turf, winning 13 and drawing six.

Aston Villa aren’t scoring much – they aren’t scoring at all, actually – but they have clearly worked on remedying their defensive issues following their 4-0 defeat at Brighton.
Since that nightmare opening 45 minutes, the Villans have conceded just once across four halves of football. They also boast the second-best expected goals conceded record, with only champions Arsenal posting better numbers.
That marries nicely with Club Brugge, who haven’t managed to score more than once in any of their last three matches but have conceded just once in five games this season.
