JOHN Lewis has urgently recalled 10 novelty items that are believed to be “asbestos-contaminated”.
Consumers have been warned to stop using the products immediately and follow the detailed disposal instructions.
A range of novelty Sophie Allport doorstops and draught excluders have been recalled by John Lewis as they may be “contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos” posing a potential health risk to consumers.
The items were sold in John Lewis between September 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019.
The recall notice was first issued on August 13, 2026 and listed the 24 items that had been recalled from Sophie Allport stores.
It was updated today with the information regarding the John Lewis recall.

According to the recall notice, the “product presents a risk to health as the marble chips sealed inside the doorstop/excluder may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos”.
As a result the products do not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
Asbestos is a banned substance as it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.
It is considered extremely toxic and can cause cancer later in life with long-term exposure.

As a result, the substance has been banned in the UK since 1999.
All the items have been taken off the market and recalled from both Sophie Allport and John Lewis.
Consumers who have bought the products are urged to stop using them immediately and keep them out of reach of children.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued the following disposal instructions for the recalled items:
- Stop using the product immediately
- If the product is undamaged, place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly and store in a secure location out of the reach of children.
- If the product is damaged and the filling is accessible, clean-up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask. Double bag the filling and product along with the used gloves, mask and cloths. Keep children and other people away from areas where the marble chips have been used until the area has been cleaned.
- Double bag the product, gloves, mask and cloth and double tape it securely.
For shoppers who purchased the products from Sophie Allport, the items can be taken back to one of its three UK stores where a full refund will be issued.
Sophie Allport has also said “if you are unable to physically return the product to a Sophie Allport Shop, or the product was purchased via an online marketplace”, customers should follow the disposal instructions “and contact your local authority/access their website for guidance on safe disposal of asbestos in your area”.
Customers who bought the items from John Lewis can return them to their nearest store, with the receipt, for a full refund.
John Lewis has also said that “if you are unable to return the product to a John Lewis shop, please contact your local authority for guidance on safe disposal of asbestos in your area”.
