OVER 1.3MILLION Brits are set to receive a £70 HMRC refund – and it’s not a scam.

The tax authority has assured that while the money is legitimate, it is important to “remain vigilant” for fraudulent texts or phone calls.

HMRC has announced that 1.32 million Brits could be eligible for a “low earner’s pension payment” which could see them receiving up to £70 in “free” money.

The pensions top-up payment is designed for low-earners who missed out on pension tax relief as a result of their workplace’s pension scheme.

This typically applies to those earning close to, but not more than, £12,570 a year – around the starting point for paying income tax.

Those eligible – more than 75% of which are women – will be contacted automatically by HMRC from now up until early 2027, either through a physical letter or their online personal tax account.

A HMRC spokesperson said that while “we know some people may be cautious about unexpected contact,” the tax authority provides “clear information about what to expect and how to verify the contact is genuine”.

They added: “Customers can check a letter is genuine on Gov.uk and should only respond via official HMRC channels.

In line with this, Brits have been reminded that HMRC will never text, email or call them regarding this payment, nor will they ever ask for PIN codes, passwords or for money.

If you are eligible, you will need to respond to the letter through official HMRC channels to receive the payment.
