A MUM tragically collapsed and died from heatstroke after climbing Mount Snowdon in temperatures above 30C, an inquest heard.

Sophie Goodyer-Bird, 35, travelled 120 miles from Birmingham to Wales with a friend to tackle the notorious mountain.

The nail technician reached the 1,085-metre (3,560ft) summit of Snowdon, also known as Yr Wyddfa, on July 10.

But Sophie became “increasingly tired” as the she and her pal made their way back down the mountain.

Temperatures across Britain had soared above 30C as the country was hit by a spell of scorching summer weather.

An inquest opening in Caernarfon heard Sophie had almost reached the bottom of the descent when she suddenly collapsed.

The mum-of-one became “unresponsive”, with fellow walkers rushing to help.

Senior coroner for north west Wales Kate Robertson said other hikers carried out CPR before medics arrived at the scene.

Sophie was declared dead at 2.18pm and was identified by her friend.

A post-mortem examination was carried out, with a pathologist giving a provisional cause of death as “exertional heat stroke“.

The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Friends of Sophie have since launched a fundraiser to help support her 12-year-old son Jacob following her death.

More than £500 has already been raised for the youngster, who friends said had “tragically lost his entire world, his beloved mom Sophie”.

Friend Jennie Goulding said Sophie had celebrated her 35th birthday on July 1 and was “so excited and determined” to climb Snowdon.

She said: “Her friends and family are unbelievably proud of her for making the climb and reaching the top.

“Unfortunately, Soph never made it back down to the bottom, leaving behind a 12 year old boy without his mom.”

Jennie described Sophie as “such a selfless soul with the most beautiful energy“.

She added: “Anyone who met Sophie will of course know how much she doted on Jacob.

“He really was the apple of her eye and she beamed with pride whenever she spoke about him.”
