Paramedics said the woman was already dead when they arrived at the scene and had suffered “multiple knife wounds” after being attacked in a hotel corridor.
Portuguese judicial police officers backed by forensic teams in protective clothing gear were seen taking photos of the scene at the four-star resort.
The victim’s partner remained in custody following the incident, being described by police as a “hotel homicide”.
Portugal’s national police force was also conducting inquiries but was not releasing the identities of either the victim or her partner.
The suspect remained in police custody this morning and is due to appear before a judge and is expected to be remanded in custody at a closed-court hearing.
The luxury resort is described online as having “striking sea views” and being within walking distance of the beach.
