Premier League’s most expensive summer transfer XI revealed as English clubs set new record by splurging over £3BILLION

THE summer transfer window is officially CLOSED.

And Tuesday’s 11pm deadline closed the book on an incredible spending spree from Premier League clubs.

The 20 clubs in England‘s top flight spent over a jaw-dropping £3BILLION bolstering their squads for the season ahead.

The biggest spenders of the window were Manchester City.

New City boss Enzo Maresca dropped a whopping £427MILLION on reinforcements to stop Arsenal from winning a second successive Prem crown.

City’s spending was rivalled by Chelsea and Tottenham, who both spent upwards of £300M.

Goalkeepers

One of the biggest stopper signings of the summer was Aston Villa‘s acquisition of Zion Suzuki

The 24-year-old seemed destined to join Italian giants Juventus before Villa swooped in and signed the Japan international, who has inked a five-year contract with the Brummie club, from Parma for a fee of £30m.

Suzuki arrived at Villa Park to replace Argentina international Emi Martinez, who joined Chelsea in a £7.5m deal following a shaky start to the season from Robert Sanchez – who has been shipped off to Como.

Liverpool also splashed the cash on a new keeper, dropping £30m on highly-rated 18-year-old Lucca Brughmans.

Arsenal made a surprise addition to their goalkeeping options, signing former Leeds goalkeeper Ilan Meslier.

The Gunners, however, didn’t have to pay a transfer fee for the Frenchman as he was a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Elland Road.

The biggest stopper signing of the summer, however, was James Trafford‘s move to Leeds, who stumped up a club-record £40m to sign the England international from City.

Defenders

The biggest defensive deal of the summer was undoubtedly done by Liverpool.

The Reds pipped Chelsea to the signature of the highly-rated Jeremy Jacquet in July.

And they paid a premium for his services, agreeing to part with £60m to sign the France Under-21 international from Rennes.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also broke the bank for a defensive reinforcement.

Eager to bolster his defensive options following injury to William Saliba during the World Cup, he raided Aston Villa for the services of Ezri Konsa.

The defending Prem champions forked out £55m to sign the England international.

Arsenal’s London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also spent big in the defensive department.

New Blues boss Xabi Alonso forked out £52m to sign centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.

Spurs spent the same sum signing Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.

Nottingham Forest also spent a pretty penny signing Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon, with it being understood that the east Midlands club spent £34m to bring the Ivory Coast international to the City Ground.

Midfielders

Manchester City ran away with the spending in the midfield department in their bid to fill the void left by Rodri, who joined Barcelona last month.

Maresca spent a whopping £116m to sign England international Elliot Anderson from Forest.

But they gazumped that figure on deadline day with a staggering £125MILLION deal to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea.

Anderson and Fernandez, 23 and 25 respectively, have inked lucrative five and six-year contracts at the Etihad.

Arsenal also spent big, adding yet more steel to their already stacked midfield, with Arteta dropping £75m on former Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes.

The Gunners’ raiding of Newcastle’s midfield, however, paled into comparison to that of their bitter rivals Spurs, who spent £100M luring Sandro Tonali away from St James’ Park.

Tottenham, desperate to improve on back-to-back 17th placed finishes, went wild in the midfield department by also signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m.

Manchester United forked out £105m bolstering their midfield with the signings of Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans from Brighton and Aston Villa, respectively.

Forwards

Just as they did last summer, Liverpool were the biggest spenders in the attacking department.

The Reds, who broke the British record transfer fee last summer to sign Alexander Isak, dropped a staggering £123m to sign wantaway winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea made British transfer history with their £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, which made the winger the most expensive English player in history.

Spurs also spent big in the attacking department with an £85m swoop for Savinho, or Savio as he wants to be referred to since his move to north London, from Manchester City.

They also picked up Omar Marmoush from the Citizens, but won’t pay up for him until next summer when they will have to fork out £60m. On top of those, they also took a punt on Mykhailo Mudryk from Chelsea on loan.

Villa also spent a pretty penny replacing the recently departed Ollie Watkins, dropping £65m to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.

City spent that figure with a perplexing deadline-day swoop for Iliman Ndiaye from Everton.

Another shock and pricey move was Liam Delap‘s £50m move to Forest just a year after his £30m transfer to Chelsea – where he scored one Premier League goal.

Arsenal, meanwhile, added to their attacking options with their £34m signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.

Money team

The summer window will go down as one of the craziest of all time.
