A BUS has ploughed into cars parked outside a train station – forcing the road to close and rail services to be cancelled.

Travel chaos has erupted following the horror smash at the station in Portslade, East Sussex, this afternoon.

Pictures showed wrecked cars lined up near the level crossing after the crash, which occurred at around 2.30pm.

The station is currently closed and services running along the line will be suspended, Southern Rail confirmed.

Boundary Road, which stretches either side of the busy tracks, has ground to a halt while emergency crews deal continue recovery work.

Eyewitnesses described seeing the number 46 bus “going into the back” of two cars, before piling into several more.

Lisa Putman told Brighton and Hove News: “The gates were down. The 46 bus turned at the station and went into the back of two cars…

“[It] then swerved and hit seven cars in the station car park.”

Matt Ashton, managing director for Brighton and Hove Buses, confirmed an “incident occurred today at Portslade Station”.

Govia Thameslink Railway said: “Portslade Station is closed while emergency services deal with an incident at the front of the station.

“We’re sorry to Southern customers who are affected.”

Southern Rail warned passengers disruption could continue until 4.30pm.

Issuing a statement on X, it said: “No trains can stop at Portslade Until further notice.

“You will need to use an alternative route to reach your destination.

“You should allow at least an additional 45 minutes to complete your journey today.

“If you are travelling to/from Portslade you will need to use an alternative route. Disruption is expected until 16:30.”
