Shane Lowry’s uncle said his nephew delivered a masterclass yesterday and put a few demons to rest.
The Offaly man cruised to victory by a record 11 shots at the Amgen Irish Open in Doonbeg yesterday as he lifted the title for the second time in sensational fashion.
“We’re feeling great. We got back late last night, but it was a lovely journey back … he gave a masterclass yesterday,” Seán Lowry told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.
“He had a few bad Sundays this year so far, but it put the demons to bed and it was brilliant.
“On links courses, there’s carnage around every corner, there are double bogeys looming everywhere, so you never say never but … thank God it worked out,” he said.
Seán Lowry said the entire family is really proud of Shane.
“He’s a lovely guy and he came across very well. I thought his speech on 18 was brilliant,” he said.
“He’s normal, the same as everyone else and he’s a great ambassador. I think he loves what he’s doing as well, which is brilliant,” he added.
Seán said his nephew is in great physical condition, and he thinks that more success is in his future.
“Yesterday he was just taking that 10 or 15 seconds extra on his putting, so I think there’s bigger and better to come now. He’s in great shape,” he said.
Seán Lowry said he hopes his nephew can carry his winning form with him.
“That’s what we’re hoping, it’s Ryder Cup year and he’s very keen on the Ryder Cup. He has made no secret of that. His love of Ireland and Offaly and Clara, I think it shines through,” he said.
Seán said he was not sure if Shane would get a chance to visit his home club in Offaly, Esker Hills.
“He’s in Adare and he’s going to Wentworth. He’s a very busy man and, I mean, his family are in Florida and he’s trying to play Wentworth this week, so there’s no day off there,” he added.
