Pogues singer Shane MacGowan left an estate worth £4.8 million (€5.6 million) in England and Wales following his death at the age of 65.
Probate records show the gross value of the Fairytale of New York singer’s estate in England and Wales was £4.8 million, with the net value listed at the same amount.
His wife Victoria Mary Clarke is named as the sole executor and beneficiary.
MacGowan’s will states: “I give, devise and bequeath all I die possessed of, both real and personal and wheresoever situate, to the said Victoria Mary Clarke for her own absolute use and benefit and I appoint her my residuary legatee.”
The will was signed on 14 March 2018, before the couple married, and refers to Clarke as his “partner”.
They married in Copenhagen in November 2018.
MacGowan’s sister, novelist Siobhan MacGowan, was named to inherit his estate if Clarke died before him.
The £4.8 million figure relates specifically to MacGowan’s estate in England and Wales.
In Ireland, a grant of probate was issued to Clarke in June 2024, according to the Courts Service probate register.
MacGowan was born to Irish parents in Pembury, Kent, on Christmas Day 1957 and spent much of his childhood in Co Tipperary, where he was immersed in Irish traditional music.
He went on to become one of Ireland’s best-known songwriters as frontman of The Pogues, whose music blended traditional Irish influences with punk.
MacGowan died on 30 November 2023, shortly before what would have been his 66th birthday.
Thousands of people later lined the streets of Dublin as his funeral cortege travelled through the city.
His funeral was held at St Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, and included performances from Nick Cave, with Johnny Depp and actor Aidan Gillen among those in attendance.
