A man in 20s is understood to be in a critical condition following an assault in Ballivor, Co Meath.

Gardaí say they responded to an incident at a residence shortly after 7am this morning.

The man who had sustained serious injuries was brought to hospital for treatment.

He was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

A man in his 40s was later arrested as part of the investigation.

He’s being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

A technical examination of the scene has been carried out.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been set up at Trim Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and anyone with information or with camera or dashcam footage is asked to contact Trim Garda Station.
