A motorist has been arrested after a two-year-old boy died in hospital after being struck by a car in Rathkeale, Co Limerick.
It is understood the two-year-old boy was struck by a car in the Abbeycourt area of the town this afternoon.
He was brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced dead.
A motorist was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at a garda station in Limerick about the incident.
The scene had been sealed off and there is a large garda presence in the area as forensic collision investigators carry out a technical examination.
A postmortem examination will be conducted at UHL by the State Pathologist tomorrow.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact Rathkeale Garda Station.
They will be viewing CCTV footage in the area as part of the investigation.
Gardaí say they are following a definite line of enquiry.
