Iarnród Éireann has warned people to expect “significant disruption” on its services to and from Westport this morning after a collision between a train and a car.
The westbound train collided with the vehicle on a level crossing at Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis, in Co Mayo shortly before 9pm last night.
The crossing in question runs across a secondary road that intersects with the N60, which is situated a short distance away.
Iarnród Éireann said bus transfers were “being arranged”.
“Customers who have already purchased tickets and no longer wish to travel can apply for a refund,” it said.
The train operator said emergency services responded to the incident “to attend to a number of occupants of the car” last night.
Gardaí described the collision as “serious”.
In a post on social media platform X, Iarnród Éireann said “our thoughts are with everyone affected”.
“A sincere thank you to all passengers/staff for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging day,” it said.
The collision was the second disruption on the Westport/Dublin line yesterday.
Bus transfers were arranged for passengers when a train struck a tractor at a level crossing between Portarlington and Tullamore.
Emergency services attended the scene and one person was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
