Cinema tickets will be available from €4 at participating cinemas across the country this weekend as National Cinema Weekend gets under way.
Around 99% of cinemas will take part in the initiative on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, with participating venues in every county.
The event has been extended to two days this year following the success of previous National Cinema Days, which attracted more than 200,000 admissions in a single day.
A mix of new releases, previews, Irish films and big-screen favourites will be showing across the weekend.
Among them are The Incomer starring Domhnall Gleeson, preview screenings of Saoirse Ronan’s Bad Apples, Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood, Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and Coyote vs. Acme.

Irish titles being screened include The Quiet Girl / An Cailín Ciúin, Báite, Celtic Utopia and Gar O’Rourke’s documentary Sanatorium, while The Young Offenders will return to cinemas to mark the film’s 10th anniversary.
Other re-releases include The Lobster, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Cars and films from The Hunger Games series.
The Young Offenders stars Alex Murphy and Chris Walley said there was “nothing like the magic of going to the movies”, describing the shared experience of watching a film on the big screen as one of their favourite things to do.
A number of cinemas will also offer sensory, subtitled and captioned screenings over the weekend.

I welcome the announcement of National Cinema Weekend which gives a good opportunity to have that big-screen experience this coming weekend with tickets from just €4.
“Ireland has one of the highest rates of cinema-attendance per capita in Europe. I want to formally acknowledge and thank our cinema operators and the cinema workforce for their diligence and steadfast commitment to ensure that Ireland’s local cinemas play a vital role in community life, bringing people together through shared cultural and educational experiences.”
