A train and a car have collided in Co Mayo in what has been described as a “serious incident”.
Rail services to and from Westport have been suspended after the crash, which was the second of separate collisions between trains and vehicles on the line today.
Irish Rail said the 6.15pm Heuston to Westport service collided with a vehicle at a user-operated level crossing at Kiltybo in Ballyhaunis just before 9pm.
The train operator said that emergency services were responding to attend to a number of occupants of the car.
Gardaí said they are at the scene of a “serious incident”, with the road closed and local diversions in place.
In a post on social media platform X, Irish Rail said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today’s incidents.
“We’ll continue to do our best to provide clear and timely updates as info becomes available.
“A sincere thank you to all passengers/staff for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging day.”
It added that its teams were working to arrange bus transfers for passengers, but that the line would remain until further notice to facilitate the emergency services response, and it warned that services in the morning may be affected.
Earlier this afternoon, the 1.10pm Westport to Dublin Heuston train struck a tractor that was crossing the line in Co Offaly, around 3.50pm.
Gardaí said emergency services attended the scene of the incident at the Meelaghans near Tullamore, and that a man had been taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Bus transfers were in operation and the Galway line was expected to reopen tonight.
