SHE left TV bosses baffled after pulling out of a major new legal drama just months before filming was due to begin, but we can reveal Michelle Keegan had good reason for walking away.
While the big-budget production would have been a huge career opportunity for the actress, there’s a major reason behind why she turned down the deal.

According to insiders, Michelle, 39, is now keen to focus on “a new chapter” in her life – and that means making big changes.
Earlier this week it was reported the star had pulled out of a major new ITV drama at the eleventh hour, despite committing to the project months earlier.
The series, which begins filming in November and is written by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson, focuses on the life of a working-class barrister, and will now see Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker take the lead.
And while Michelle’s last-minute decision was said to be a “huge blow” to bosses, she felt she had no other option.

Our insider says: “Michelle is at a point in her career where she doesn’t feel she has anything to prove by saying ‘yes’ to every job that comes her way.
“She’s become much more selective about the roles she takes and is prepared to wait for something that really excites her.
“The ITV legal drama was a major opportunity, but Michelle is increasingly looking at the bigger picture and asking whether a project is right for her. She’s got a very clear idea now of where she wants her career to go, and that means being strategic about the work she takes on.”
It’s a clear sign that Michelle’s priorities have shifted, especially since becoming a mum.
The former Coronation Street star welcomed daughter Palma with her husband, DJ and presenter Mark Wright, 39, in March last year and took a brief break from acting to enjoy time with her new family.
Our insider adds: “She’s even been prepared to walk away from big projects. Obviously she is balancing family life too, which adds another element to her being even more particular about the roles she commits to.”
Michelle’s first role since having Palma is in new ITV drama The Blame, which airs on September 20.
She plays a policewoman battling misogyny within the force as she investigates the murder of a schoolgirl and uncovers a tangled web of lies and institutional cover-ups.
It’s the type of gritty role she now wants to be associated with as she looks to cement her status as one of Britain’s leading actresses.
Our insider says: “The Blame was exactly the sort of project Michelle wanted to come back for. She really threw herself into it and was drawn to the complexity of the character and the story she was telling.
“She had been offered other things, but didn’t want to come back just for the sake of working. She wanted a role that felt challenging and that she could really sink her teeth into and this ticked all those boxes.”
It was also a role that felt close to home as her father Michael is a retired Greater Manchester Police inspector.
Michelle said in a recent interview: “My dad was in the police force since he was 17.
“He was an inspector so I used to go to him and go, ‘Dad what do you think about this?’ and when I was doing the meeting scenes, ‘How would you talk to people in the police force and how was your body language?’ and I used to go to him quite a lot actually for resources.”
Our source added: “Having her dad work in the police force was obviously something Michelle could draw on.
“She already had a personal understanding of that world, but she was very keen to make the character her own rather than simply relying on her family connection.
“She did a lot of thinking about what it would be like to be a woman working in such a male-dominated environment, and that was a big part of what attracted her to the role.”
This latest role is a far cry from the girl-next-door parts Michelle could have become typecast in after spending six years playing Tina McIntyre in Coronation Street.
Since leaving the Cobbles in 2014, she has played a drug smuggler, a PTSD-stricken veteran and a grieving mother carrying a secret, as well as taking on the physically demanding role of military medic Georgie Lane in BBC drama Our Girl.

She has also recently filmed Netflix series The Woods, based on Harlan Coben’s bestselling thriller novel alongside Eastenders actor Tom Bateman. It follows on from her huge success for her role in the adaptation of Coben’s novel Fool Me Once in 2024.
“Michelle has deliberately pushed herself into characters that are very different from one another,” our source says. “That hasn’t been accidental.
“She wants to keep challenging herself rather than going back to the safe option of playing the likeable girl-next-door. Every role is another opportunity to show a different side of what she can do.
“She’s very conscious that she wants to be taken seriously as an actress and to show people that there is much more to her than the image they might have of her from Coronation Street and the ‘sexiest woman’ label.”
After almost two decades in the spotlight, it’s clear a confident Michelle is now no longer afraid to say ‘no’ and is prepared to wait for the right role rather than settle for one that doesn’t fit.
“This is a new chapter for Michelle,” our source says. “She’s no longer interested in being defined by where she started out.
“She wants people to look at her body of work and see an actress who has taken risks, challenged herself and earned her place among Britain’s leading actresses.
“She’s prepared to put the work in and wait for the right roles rather than take the easy option.”
