In England, parents can be charged an £80 fine per child (rising to £160 if not paid within 21 days) by their local authority if they cannot provide a valid reason for their child’s absence from school.
Three or more unauthorised absences within three years may even result in a court order.

Meanwhile, last night hosts Will Best, 41, and AJ Odudu, 38, welcomed a whole host of new housemates who will now battle it out for the £100,000 prize pot.
Speaking about joining the show, Yasmin said: “I am messy. I’ll look at the dishes and be like ‘oh I’ll get back to it later’.
“I’ve got three degrees and I’m really smart but I have no common sense. My mum has six children – she was a single mum. So I would 100% love to help her.”
