Patients have been describing their frustration as yet another leak in the roof at Sligo University Hospital has resulted in operations being cancelled on Monday morning.
Repairs have been carried out to the roof of the orthopaedic theatre in the past following other leaks which cancelled sveral operations.
The Sligo Champion understands that operations scheduled before 8am on Monday were cancelled at the last minute with patients already gowned up for theatre.
Some five patients due for for elective surgery were told that due to a leak in the Orthopaedic theatre roof again, all surgery had to be cancelled.
One frustrated patient who was due to have knee replacement surgery told The Sligo Champion.
She said: “This means I will all have to be resheduled and the waiting list will be pushed back. This is shocking and an absolute disgrace.
“The leak in the roof was supposed to have been fixed the last time it leaked. The elective surgeries were put on hold for 3 months so a proper job could be done. and obviously that job was only half done resulting in this event happening today.
“Why when we have such great consultants with such amazing results when they can do surgery, are we as a region being let down so many times and sometimes being left behind when it comes to funding and action being taken.
“It is time for some real action from all our politicians representing the North West. It has gone too far this time. The Minister for Health was at Sligo University Hospital when the last leak occured where she reassured the consultants and the wider community that she would take the neccessary action.”
The previous significant leak at the hospital occurred last February with extensive repairs carried out in its aftermath.
The HSE has been contacted for a response.
