A man in his 60s has been charged after €500,000 worth of cocaine was found concealed within bags of lollipops in a passengers’ luggage at Dublin Airport.
The 5kg of drugs were discovered when Revenue officers stopped and searched the baggage yesterday as part of the GNECB’s Operation Skein.
Revenue officers assisted by the Ballymun Drugs Unit seized the drugs, and in follow up searches, gardai seized €16,000 in cash and a further quantity of various controlled drugs valued at €14,500.
“One male, aged in his 60s, arrested by gardaí in connection with the investigation, has since been charged,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“He appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice (CCJ No. 4), this morning.
“As this is now before the courts, gardai will not be commenting further.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
Operation Skein is coordinated by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau and investigates international criminal organisations which commit fraud worldwide and launder the proceeds through networks of bank accounts in Ireland.
