One of the grandest Lego sets ever has been unveiled, with a recreation of Downton Abbey that features no less than 13 minifigures, from Lord Grantham to Mr Carson.
You can get Lego sets based on just about anything nowadays but most of the really unexpected ideas come from the Ideas line, where fans design their own models and then after a lengthy voting process Lego decides which ones can be made into an actual product – that the original creator gets a small cut of the profits from.
That’s resulted in everything from sets based on Jaws to The X-Files and The Goonies. And now adding to that list of pop culture favourites comes… Downtown Abbey.
As you’d imagine, it’s a massive set, with over 4,700 pieces, but for that you get an impressive recreation of the front of the building, detailed interiors, and 13 different minifigures of the cast… plus one of Lord Grantham’s dogs.
It’s relatively rare to see British architecture (the show is filmed mostly at Highclere Castle in Hampshire) in Lego form so the model’s neat on just that level, but for fans of the show it’s filled with Easter eggs, referencing specific episodes and plot points.
The model has two floors and features the grand dining room, main hall, library, kitchen, servants’ hall, and Mr Carson’s office. Plus, you get a bonus cedar tree for outside.
You can lift up the top floor to get easier access and see all the little details, like the old timey telephone and the electric mixer in the kitchen – which was a modern marvel at the time. There’s also references to Sebastian Veselka and a very complicated looking bell board, to call the servants.
The 13 minifigures are The Dowager Countess, Lord Grantham, Lady Grantham, Lady Mary, Lady Edith, Tom Branson, Mr Carson, Mrs Hughes, Mr Bates, Anna Bates, Thomas Barrow, Mrs Patmore, and Daisy Parker.
Each minifigure has double-side faces, for different expressions, and the women have both one-piece bricks to simulate them wearing a dress and interchangeable leg pieces for when they want to sit down.
The original designer of the set is Czech fan Sebastian Veselka (aka BRO3), who’s understandably over the moon about his design being picked: ‘Rebuilding Downton Abbey as a Lego set felt like the perfect way to celebrate the series in a personal way, bringing together my love of British architecture, my memories of watching the show with my family, and the atmosphere of the 1920s.
‘Seeing the project reach 10,000 supporters in just three months was incredible. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported it and can’t wait for fans to travel back in time and step inside the Crawley family’s iconic home in Lego brick form.’
The completed model is 44cm wide, 30cm high, and 16cm deep, which adds up to a price of £269.99 in the UK.
It’ll be available from October 4, from Lego stores and the Lego website, but you can get it earlier, on October 1, if you’re a Lego Insider – which requires only a free sign-up.
