Albany Caledonian won their fourth Great Southern Soccer Association senior men’s title on the trot, clinching matters in style with a 6-0 win over Rovers on Saturday.

They secured top spot as nearest rivals Polonia sat out with the bye and are now too far adrift to make up ground when they face Phoenix in their final league fixture this weekend.

Doug Grant opened the scoring early with a sixth-minute penalty and then Josh D’Aprile doubled the advantage before the half was done.

They hit the gas in the second half, piling in four more after the break through Levi Clay, Nathan Kay, Dale Bloor and Taylor Clay.

That completed the rout and another championship – and they have a chance of a league and cup double when they tackle Phoenix in the GSSA Cup final on September 19.

Phoenix beat Bayswater 4-0 in their contest with Malcolm Van Burgel and Corey Plug sharing the goals with two apiece.

Calies have also won the women’s senior league title, Holly Froehnelt grabbing five goals in a 10-0 walloping of Sharks.

They too have the chance of a league and cup double with their cup final to come against Denmark.

Abi Matthews (two goals), Kayla Stoney, Stella Cuthbert and Ella Belfield completed the rout over the league’s bottom side.

In the other games, Denmark were 1-0 winners over Rovers, Lumeah Masih converting the only goal, while Phoenix beat Polonia 4-0.

Amaya Dobbe scored a hat-trick with Lee Dekker adding the fourth for Phoenix.

In the men’s reserves competition, Calies were held 2-2 by Phoenix while Polonia dispatched Rovers 5-1.

Calies were 2-0 up but Reagan Korthuis and Kieran Dekker levelled things up for Phoenix.

In the women’s reserves, Denmark Rezzies were 1-0 winners over Calies while Phoenix and Polonia drew 0-0.

A Kira Clark penalty proved the match winner for Denmark.

There were wins in the men’s masters on September 3 for Old Boys, Phoenix and Bayswater and in the socials the previous day for Polonia, Sharks and Denmark.

In the women’s socials on September 4, Griffins, Polonia, Bayswater and Mt Barker earned wins while Denmark Diamonds and Denmark Dream drew 0-0.
