A 17-year-old boy who was found guilty by a jury of the murder of a 44-year old postman in Doneraile, north Co Cork, last year has been sentenced to 11 years in detention with three years suspended at the Central Criminal Court in Cork.
Barry Daly died of catastrophic head and facial injuries when he was struck with a golf club in the front garden of his home at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile on 12 October last year.
The 17-year old is one of three people convicted in relation to Mr Daly’s death.
He had pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
However, this plea was not acceptable to the State and he was subsequently convicted by a jury of murder, following a trial at the Central Criminal Court in Cork.
A 16-year-old boy whose plea of guilty to manslaughter was accepted by the State has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in detention, with the final six months suspended.
Neither can be identified, because of their age.
Last month, 21-year-old Alex Deady of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, was sentenced to life in prison, after a jury at his trial found him guilty of Mr Daly’s murder.
Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford said that while the attack on Mr Daly was no’t prolonged, it was vicious.
