Iran launches missiles at U.S. targets in Jordan, state media says

Iran has launched missiles toward U.S. targets in Jordan, Iranian state-run media said, following the latest American strikes.

It’s the latest tit-for-tat retaliation after the U.S. military said it destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers following two attacks on a U.S. warship by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard over the past two days.

U.S. Central Command, when asked about the strikes on the Jordanian air base, said it had no information to offer.

Jordan’s military said its air defense systems intercepted 18 ballistic missiles launched toward its territory and two others fell in places where people do not live. It says it had no reports of casualties.

Jordan is a staunch U.S. ally that hosts American forces, making the kingdom’s military bases a target of repeated Iranian strikes.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy also warned crews of oil tankers near ports in Kuwait and Bahrain to immediately leave their vessels, saying the ships could be targeted in retaliation for the U.S. attacks on Iranian tankers.

CENTCOM confirms it struck five Iranian oil tankers

The U.S. military’s Central Command confirmed Tuesday it “destroyed” five oil tankers associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In a statement accompanied by video footage of the operation, CENTCOM said the strikes were in response to a set of unsuccessful Iranian missile attacks against a U.S. warship in recent days.

Four of the tankers were struck in the Gulf of Oman, according to CENTCOM, and a fifth was hit near Kharg Island, an island in the Persian Gulf that serves as Iran’s primary terminal for crude oil exports. It alleged the ships were part of Iran’s shadow fleet, a network of tankers used by Iran to export oil and generate revenue for the regime.

“American forces directed the crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable,” CENTCOM said.

CBS News had reported on a U.S. attack against Iranian tankers earlier Tuesday.

CENTCOM also struck three Iranian oil tankers last weekend in retaliation for an earlier attempted Iranian attack against U.S. Navy ships.

26 more U.S. service members reported wounded in action since early July

The U.S. military on Tuesday reported 26 additional service members were wounded in action in recent months.

The locations and dates of the injuries were not reported, but they were categorized in the military’s casualty database under “Overseas Operations,” a term the Pentagon has used for injuries and deaths in the Middle East and the Iran war since July 7.

According to the Pentagon’s database, 403 people were wounded in overseas operations between July 7 and Sept. 8. In a separate listing in the database under Operation Epic Fury, the military’s previous term for the war with Iran, the Pentagon said 417 people were wounded from February to July.

Operation Epic Fury’s exact end date had been unclear for months, until the Pentagon told CBS News last week that it formally ended on May 5. However, the military still lists five injuries in June and one non-hostile death in July under Epic Fury.

Irani foreign minister mocks more sanctions by U.S.

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, derided new sanctions on Tuesday, hours after the U.S. instituted punishments for airlines not affected by previous sanctions.

“After 47 years of sanctions, the US went to war with Iran on behalf of Israel. The fallout has been disastrous for America, including its standing worldwide,” he wrote on X.

“After failing to achieve its aims through sanctions or war, Washington’s ‘novel’ solution is…more sanctions. Seriously?”

Araghchi has been a major player in negotiations over a ceasefire and lasting peace, but he’s also regularly antagonized the Trump administration.

“Let this be a warning to anyone doing business with Iran’s remaining airlines, all of which we sanctioned today: You are at risk of being cut off from the global financial system,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a news release.

The Trump administration accused the 36 entities targeted this week of supporting Iran’s efforts to use its aviation sector to move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo.

Iran behind Houthi attacks on Saudis, Rubio says

Iran’s hand is behind the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday during his trip to South America.

“The Houthis in many ways are agents and proxies of the Iranians. I think behind some of this is clearly the Iranian hand,” Rubio said. “The U.S. has a very strong military relationship with Saudi Arabia, and we’re watching those events very closely.”

The Houthis, who are supported by Iran, launched attacks Tuesday on Abha International Airport, King Khalid air base and facilities belonging to state-owned oil giant Aramco in Abha and Jizan. At least 73 people were injured in the strikes, a Saudi-led coalition said.

The Saudis retaliated hours later with strikes of their own against Houthi territory in western Yemen. Rubio was asked whether the U.S. would put pressure on the Houthis or whether it would “stay out of this fight.” He deferred to the Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries, 14 of which have signed on to support the fight against the Houthis.

“It’s been going on for some time,” Rubio said. “I think there’s some ground operations as well where many forces are taking on the Houthis, pushing back against some of the ground advances that they attempted to make.”

He also said he didn’t believe the U.S. Department of War would “make any announcements on that today,” as far as the U.S. getting further involved.

U.N. chief condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Houthi rebel attacks against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday that targeted oil facilities and wounded dozens of people.

“We condemn the Houthi cross-border attacks against multiple sites in southern Saudi Arabia,” said Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

“These attacks affected civilians and energy infrastructure, and we of course express deep concern over the reports of civilian casualties,” Dujarric said.

The Saudis have since responded to attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis in strikes of their own.

The European Union also urged the Houthi rebels to “end all attacks” on Tuesday, condemning strikes on Saudi Arabia that targeted oil facilities and wounded dozens of people.

“These attacks constitute a dangerous escalation, violate international law, undermine regional security and stability and risk further jeopardising efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Yemen,” said Anouar El Anouni, a spokesman for the bloc’s diplomatic service.

Red Cross calls for ‘urgent steps’ to de-escalate Yemen-Saudi fighting

The International Committee of the Red Cross warned Tuesday that hostilities affecting Yemen and Saudi Arabia risked expanding the Middle East conflict, calling for urgent de-escalation.

Yemen’s Houthis said Saudi Arabia hit back with a series of strikes on Tuesday after the Iran-backed rebels targeted oil facilities and other sites, wounding dozens, in their heaviest attack in years.

The rapid round of strikes and counterstrikes follows the unravelling of a four-year truce in July, months into the war between the United States and Iran.

ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said in a statement that “urgent steps” were needed to de-escalate the hostilities.

“The recent escalation of hostilities in the Middle East affecting Yemen and Saudi Arabia risks a further expansion of conflict in the region that, if not contained, could worsen the already devastating humanitarian situation faced by millions of people,” she warned.

“If the fighting continues, we fear it will lead to more deaths and injuries, population displacement and a potentially catastrophic disruption of essential services and infrastructure such as health care, water, fuel and electricity,” she added.

The fighting has left more than 500 people dead, mostly combatants from both sides, according to an AFP tally based on sources from each camp.

Oil prices keep rising and weigh on Wall Street

U.S. stocks were drifting lower Tuesday in their return to trading from a three-day weekend after the latest fighting in the war with Iran pushed oil prices higher.

The S&P 500 fell 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 575 points, or 1.1%, as of noon Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% lower.

In the oil market, the price for a barrel of Brent crude rose 0.6% to $97.54 after briefly climbing as high as $99.46. It’s jumped from roughly $72 since early July as increased fighting in the Middle East keeps the global flow of oil constricted.

More expensive oil has worsened worries about the high inflation weighing on people and companies across the country, which gives extra heft to a couple reports coming later this week. On Thursday, the U.S. government will release its August report for inflation at the wholesale level, which economists expect will show an acceleration to 5.4% from 4.7% in July.

U.S. hits remaining parts of Iran’s aviation sector with sanctions

The U.S. on Tuesday imposed sanctions on additional aspects of Iran’s aviation industry, targeting over two dozen commercial and private airlines, and foreign cargo service providers.

The latest actions are part of the Trump administration’s Operation Economic Outcast campaign, aimed at severing “critical financial lifelines” for the already heavily sanctioned Iranian government.

The Trump administration accused the 36 entities targeted this week of supporting Iran’s efforts to use its aviation sector to move weapons, personnel and illicit cargo.

It also claimed that private entities based in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan and Malaysia have provided parts and logistics services to Iran’s Mahan Air, which has been subject to U.S. counterterrorism sanctions since 2019 for its support for Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

Experts told CBS News in August that new U.S. sanctions targeting Iran would have a limited effect if they didn’t include meaningful targeting of China, which has helped prop up Iran’s economy by buying its oil.

Iran claimed on Tuesday that it captured an advanced unmanned U.S. submarine in the Strait of Hormuz.

The navy of the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said in a statement that its forces “captured one of the most modern intelligent and unmanned submarines of the terrorist U.S. military at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz at dawn today, in a complex operation involving intelligence and operational surveillance.”

The vessel “possesses the latest technology in the field of underwater systems in the world and was delivered to the fleet of the terrorist U.S. military in 2025,” the Revolutionary Guard said. The U.S. did not immediately comment on the claim.

Iran and the U.S. exchanged fire in the straight over the weekend, with both sides launching attacks on vessels. Neither of the warships targeted by Iranian missiles were impacted, the U.S. military said, adding that three Iranian-owned oil tankers were hit and disabled.

Saudi Arabia says it will use all available means to protect against Houthi attacks

Saudi Arabia said Tuesday that it would not hesitate to defend itself against any Houthis attacks and would use all available means to protect its interests, while keeping the door to diplomacy open to address the Yemen crisis.

Speaking alongside his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah said the kingdom “will not hesitate to support what serves the interests of Yemen and the region,” according to Al-Riyadh, a pro-government Saudi daily newspaper.

Commenting on the Houthi’s recent strikes on Saudi Arabia, he said, “The Houthi has opened a door for himself that he cannot handle.”

Iran says 27 airports damaged in war

Iran said that 27 airports across the country were damaged in the first part of the war with the U.S., affecting runways, safety buildings, navigation and inspection equipment, and passenger terminals.

“27 airports were damaged during the war,” the head of the Iran Airports Company, Morteza Dehghan, said Monday, according to Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency. He added that “with the full capabilities of domestic specialists in various airport and air navigation sectors, we were able to immediately after the ceasefire provide air transportation services to various economic sectors of the country and the people.”

Dehghan also said several airports and aviation facilities were hit again after the ceasefire, including radar and navigation systems, underscoring the need for continuous monitoring and adjustments to operational conditions.

He said all international airports, air-border airports and provincial-center airports had been returned to operational status, while airports with lower traffic levels were being prioritized for reconstruction.

Qatar says it is working with China to resume Middle East talks

Qatar’s government said Tuesday that the small Persian Gulf nation was working with China in a bid to resume diplomacy aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the conflict in the Middle East.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani was in Beijing Monday for a meeting with China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Ibrahim Al Hashami, a spokesman for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, said the nation was working intensively with international partners including China “to resume diplomacy and dialogue and to put forward practical ideas that address the concerns of all parties.”

China is one of Iran’s most important trade allies, accounting for 45% of Tehran’s oil sales, according to a U.S. government report from March.

On Aug. 24, the U.S. announced plans to introduce tougher sanctions on Iran’s trade partners, but Beijing insisted its business with Tehran was in line with international law, and should not be disrupted.

Maritime trade group says Middle East war fueling a “structural shift” as rules of international trade break down

The conflict in the Middle East and uncertainty over future access to ports and transport routes are signals of a growing breakdown in the security of international shipping rules, a group of maritime nations said in a rare statement Tuesday.

The Global Shipping Group, a consortium of 18 countries including Denmark, the U.K. and Canada, cited the conflict in the Middle East, along with the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, as examples highlighting the fragility of maritime trade.

Global oil prices hover near highest level in weeks

International oil prices are trading near their highest levels since July, as the U.S.-Iran conflict and the energy disruptions it has wrought show no signs of abating.

The international Brent crude oil benchmark hovered around $97 a barrel for November deliveries in Monday evening ET trading, and the U.S.-based West Texas Intermediate benchmark traded above $92 a barrel for October deliveries. Both oil benchmarks are near their highest levels since late July, when Brent surpassed $100 a barrel.

President Trump predicted late Monday: “Oil prices will drop precipitously, like everything else is dropping (but more!), when we WIN the war with Iran.”

The president has made similar predictions in the past. Global oil prices have remained elevated since the U.S.-Iran war began, as Iran threatens to fire at ships that sail through the Strait of Hormuz without permission. Prices have jumped over the last week and a half as hostilities picked up again, reaching their highest level in over a month on Monday.

Iran increases cost of gasoline for its heaviest users

Iran early Tuesday introduced a higher price for its heaviest users of gasoline, state media reported, in the latest economic pinch caused by months of war. It’s the second such hike since December.

Such gas price increases can be sensitive and contribute to inflation. An increase in 2019 sparked nationwide protests and a crackdown that reportedly killed over 300 people.

Without specifically mentioning the war with the United States, the government’s announcement cited the “current situation,” adding that the extra money from the price increase will be given to households.

Under the new system, people buying more than their quota of 110 liters (29 gallons) of gasoline a month now must pay 100,000 rials (about 7 cents) per liter, or twice as much as they have been paying since December.

Iran still has some of the world’s lowest gasoline prices, but the price increase adds to daily pressures for many of the country’s more than 90 million people. Already, the currency has been dropping to record lows, and purchasing power has weakened. On Monday, the U.S. dollar was trading at 2.22 million rials.

Keramat Veis Karami, the CEO of the state oil distribution company, on Monday said the new gasoline rate would affect 15% of consumers, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The CEO said consumption reached a record high at 145 million liters (38 million gallons) per day in August, while domestic production capacity was 122 million liters per day. The rest of the supply is imported.

Yemen’s Houthis accuse Saudi Arabia of air raids, missile strikes

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Monday accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out airstrikes around the country, including the deadly bombardment of a prison, as the rebels press an offensive to seize territory near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The rebels’ media said the attacks targeted Houthi positions across the Arabian Peninsula’s poorest country, which is divided between areas held by the Iran-backed group and those controlled by the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government.

Saba news agency, which is affiliated with the Houthi movement, reported seven people were killed by Saudi airstrikes on the prison in Al-Hazm in the north of Yemen, including one child visiting the facility.

Seven others were wounded in the strikes on the prison, the agency added, citing the health ministry in the Houthi-held Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

Footage shared by the rebel group of what they described as the damage to the prison, located in Jawf province, showed smoke rising from the blast site as rescue workers picked through rubble.

Days of fighting near the Red Sea coast have left more than 300 people dead and displaced hundreds of families as the Houthis try to capture land bordering the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Israeli military vows to continue to “remove threats” from Hezbollah after Lebanon strikes

Israel’s military said Monday that it was committed to the ceasefire but would continue to “remove threats” from Hezbollah, after the Lebanese health ministry reported 12 people killed in overnight strikes.

The Israeli military said it had struck Hezbollah “infrastructure sites” across southern Lebanon in response to the launch of two explosive drones toward its troops, as well as “several terrorists” it said were transferring weapons.

In a separate statement, it said it killed a Hezbollah member in the area of the Beaufort fortress who opened fire on its troops from inside a building, and that “during the close-quarters encounter,” two Israeli soldiers “were lightly injured.”

“The claim that several uninvolved individuals were harmed as a result of the strikes is being reviewed,” the Israeli military said, adding that it “will continue to operate to remove threats while remaining committed to the ceasefire agreement.”

Oman navy rescued 16 crew members from tanker struck by Iran

Sixteen crew members aboard a Saudi-flagged oil tanker were rescued by Oman’s navy one week ago, after Iran attacked the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to an Omani maritime safety agency. Two people on the tanker were killed in the attack, the agency said on Monday.

“A Royal Navy of Oman vessel provided logistical support to the tanker’s 25-member crew and evacuated 16 crew members while ensuring that the necessary medical care was provided,” Oman’s Maritime Security Center said in a statement.

The statement did not share what happened to the rest of the crew.

Saudi Arabia’s national shipping firm said on Wednesday that two Filipino sailors were killed when the tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, as fresh violence flared between the U.S. and Iran earlier in the week.

School books seen among rubble after deadly strike in Lebanon

School books and remnants of furniture were among the rubble left by Israeli strikes that hit a building in the Lebanese town of Kfar Rumman, according to an AFP photographer who saw the debris.

The building was destroyed, and 11 people were killed, according to local media reports. The Lebanese health ministry said another attack in the same town killed a rescuer and wounded another person.

Rescue teams were searching the debris Monday for other victims.

People in the town had returned home following the June truce after being displaced by the war. But one of them, Fouad Chakaron, told AFP that “we’ve lived in fear” since returning.

Chakaron said the targeted building was inhabited by “peaceful people with no connection to anyone.”

Neighbors fled after the strike, which also damaged nearby buildings, AFP’s photographer said.

U.N. nuclear agency chief says Iran engagement is key to resuming inspections

International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi said renewed engagement between Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog is essential to resuming inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities. At a briefing Monday, Grossi told reporters that access, security and confidentiality concerns can be addressed through dialogue.

Grossi said, at this point, “there’s no engagement” with Iran, adding that it has indicated it will not cooperate until a broader political agreement is reached.

“We do not subscribe to this logic,” he said, stressing that Iran’s obligations as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty “do not disappear.”

Grossi said Iran has yet to provide information required under its safeguards agreement about the status and condition of safeguarded nuclear material following attacks on its facilities, which he said “should never take place.”

Asked about the prospects for renewed inspections, Grossi gave a clear answer: “The best, shortest way for a positive outcome is for Iran to engage with us.”

Traffic through Strait of Hormuz reportedly hits lowest level since May

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dipped to its lowest level since May, according to shipping data quoted by the Reuters news agency.

Data from analytics firm Kpler recorded on Sunday an average of 10 ships per day transiting the vital waterway. The 10-day average measured Saturday was 13. It was more than 15 on Friday.

Only two vessels passed through the strait on Saturday, and six on Sunday, using mostly the Iranian route, according to Reuters.

The dip in traffic comes amid a flare-up in the conflict, with the U.S. announcing on Saturday it had struck and disabled three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for previous attacks. Tehran responded by announcing it had targeted more ships traveling in what it calls unauthorized routes.

Traffic through the strait has been volatile since a period of relative calm in the fighting between the U.S. and Iran, but it is still well below pre-war levels of 130 per day.

Qatar says Gulf countries cannot rely on the U.S. alone for security

Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said Monday the war with Iran had shown that Persian Gulf countries should not rely solely on their strategic partnership with the United States to maintain their security.

“We need to recognize in the Gulf region that the presence of international forces in the region and the establishment of a strategic partnership with the United States are extremely important, but they are not sufficient,” Al Ansari said during a panel discussion at the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi. “Self-reliance in the field of security is the only way forward.”

“We need our partners and allies, but we cannot rely on them alone for our security,” he said.

Qatar was one of the countries targeted on a regular basis by Iran in retaliation for U.S. strikes at the height of the war.

Tehran says Iran-Oman talks on Strait of Hormuz in “final stages”

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday that negotiations with Oman regarding the future of the Strait of Hormuz had reached the “final stage.”

The two countries sit on opposite sides of the strategic waterway and have been engaged in talks for months with the goal of reaching an understanding on how to manage commercial traffic through the strait in the future.

“Within the coming days, the understanding between Iran and Oman for a temporary route safe in the Strait of Hormuz will be registered with the International Maritime Organization.”

Throughout the talks, both sides have suggested the possibility of charging fees for ships to transit the waterway, a notion the U.S. government has bristled at.

Emirati diplomat says restoring trust with Iran will be difficult but necessary

A top Emirati official appeared to extend an olive branch to Iran on Monday, saying that restoring trust with Tehran would be difficult, but necessary.

Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser to the United Arab Emirates president, also said Persian Gulf countries had failed to respond in a united fashion to Iran’s attacks and threats during the U.S.-Iran war, with each country defending itself but not embracing a shared strategy.

Gulf countries bore the brunt of Tehran’s retaliation for American strikes, with missiles and drone strikes hitting military targets as well as civilian areas on a regular basis at the height of the fighting.

“Geography leaves us no alternative to engagement, but we must distinguish clearly between rebuilding a necessary and functional relationship with Iran and rebuilding the trust that has been broken. The first is necessary. The second will be far more difficult,” Gargash said at the Hili Forum in Abu Dhabi.

Iran warns South Korea against military deployment alongside the U.S.

Iran’s foreign ministry on Monday warned South Korea against deploying military assets or getting involved in any other way with U.S. operations in and around the Strait of Hormuz, saying such a move would have “serious consequences.”

On Friday, the South Korean government said it would consider taking part in naval operations, provided that its own military readiness was not compromised, but added that no decision had been made.

On Monday, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned Seoul against succumbing to what he called “U.S. pressure and intimidation.”

“Any military deployment or participation in operations by other countries in the Persian Gulf or the Strait of Hormuz can only be regarded as direct support for the party responsible for that aggression and will have serious consequences,” he said in a post on X.

Tehran says it will announce new Strait of Hormuz “exclusion zone”

The new head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said Tehran plans to announce an “exclusion zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz aimed at vessels it believes are attempting to transit the waterway.

Mohsen Rezaei’s comments to Iran’s state broadcaster came with few details, a day after the U.S. struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to Tehran launching ballistic missiles at U.S. warships.

The new zone should be announced in the coming days and weeks and “will begin from the line of the U.S. naval blockade, extend toward the Strait of Hormuz, and from this side continue into the Persian Gulf,” Rezaei said without providing more details.

Price of oil climbs, as regular gas averages nearly a dollar higher than last year’s Labor Day

The price of Brent crude, the international standard for oil, added another 67 cents, reaching $96.95 per barrel.

The average price of regular gas was $4.14 a gallon heading into the holiday, nearly a dollar higher than last year and well above the Labor Day weekend record of $3.82 from 2012, according to AAA motor club.

Prices shot up after the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in February and have not settled down since. Crude oil traffic through the key Strait of Hormuz has plunged, and Iran has refused to reopen the waterway.

Iran threatens “intense” and “painful” response to U.S. strikes on oil tankers

The speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, threatened on Sunday to launch swifter and more forceful responses to U.S. attacks, after Tehran targeted American warships in retaliation for U.S. attacks on tankers.

“The Americans must have understood that the era of proportionate responses has come to an end,” said Ghalibaf in a speech carried by state media, adding that “any aggression against Iran’s interests and security will receive a faster, more intense and more painful response.”

U.S. Central Command said Saturday it had “permanently disabled” three Iranian oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours,” Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said in a statement. “We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.”
