Emmerdale spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (September 9) episode that is now available to view on ITVX and YouTube. The episode in question will air on ITV1 on at 8pm.

Hell hath no fury like Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), which is a lesson Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) learned the hard way as her granddaughter exacted utterly shocking revenge.

Charity, as viewers know, confessed the truth about baby Leyla’s parentage earlier this week, leaving Sarah absolutely devastated.

Viewers will recall that Charity offered to be a surrogate for grandchild Sarah, who was unable to have children of her own.

However, when the embryo transfer failed, Charity cheated on Mack Boyd (Lawrence Robb) with ex Ross Barton (Michael Parr), subsequently falling pregnant with his baby.

The Woolpack icon kept shtum, letting Sarah and Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) believe that baby Leyla was their own.

But with Sarah threatening to go to the police and reveal that she was the one who killed Dr Todd (Caroline Harker)not Charity, who confessed to the crime, claiming self-defence – Charity was forced to take action, spilling the beans about Leyla.

Sarah was enraged, branding her gran all sorts of hurtful names and telling her she no longer wanted her in her life.

After gathering together the few who knew the truth about Leyla’s parentage, she swore them all to silence, forbidding them from ever discussing it aloud – and reiterating that Jacob must never know.

Charity, meanwhile, begged for forgiveness but Sarah refused, claiming she’s ‘dead’ to her.

And Sarah ultimately proved such a thing when, in a cruel twist, she headed to the police station to change her statement, telling detectives that Charity murdered Todd in cold blood and had coerced her into making a statement to back up her claims of self-defence.

Charity’s world fell apart when she was hauled back in to the station and told of Sarah’s change of heart.

Realising her own granddaughter had cruelly sealed her fate, the scales fell from Charity’s eyes as she was charged with murder and taken to her cell.

Is this really the end for Charity? Or will Sarah realise the impact such a thing will have on all of Charity’s loved ones and do the right thing?
