TULLOGHER-ROSBERCON
Late Mikie Greene
We lost another much-respected parishioner with the death of Mikie Greene from Raheen on the Waterford Road last week. Mikie was known far and wide through his business and sporting activities. He worked in Stafford’s of Rosbercon for a long number of years before setting up his own timber company in Wexford town where he was highly thought of as a good business man.
On the sporting field he was a class act both at hurling, football and golf. He figured on the St Canice’s minor football and hurling teams in the early 1950’s. Then in 1957, he starred as a wing back in Tullogher’s first ever Kilkenny Junior hurling victory. On a never to be forgotten December day In Nowlan Park, they edged out Young Ireland’s of Gowran on a 4-4 to 1-3 scoreline. Mikie also donned the Black and Amber of Kilkenny at minor level playing in Croke Park against Dublin.
On the golfing scene he was a familiar Sunday morning part of a fourball with John Dowling (RIP), John Murphy (RIP, Mick Malone and Davy Doran. He represented New Ross in various competitions and served as President in 1989 and was also a life member of the club. He will be remembered as the man who rarely missed a fairway with his drive.
Mikie was laid to rest in St Stephen’s Cemetery after Requiem Mass celebrated by Monsignor Joe McGrath on Saturday morning last. He is survived by his wife, Maura, daughters, Martina, Niamh, son Eoghan, brother Johnny, sister Nan and a large extended family to whom sincere sympathy goes in their sad loss. Go nDeana Dia Trocaire ar a Anam Dilis.
What a week !
It was win, win all the way for Tullogher hurling teams last week. In the Under 16 Kilkenny League, they had a one-point win over Lisdowney, 1-18 to 2-14. The minors kept up the good work with two victories, the first over Mooncoin, 2-19 to 1-21 and then a great victory over Graigue/Ballycallan, on the score line of 4-15 to 2-15.
In the Group A Kilkenny League the Under 14’s had a whopping victory over Piltown by 11-8 to 4-12.
Then on Saturday, the Intermediate team concluded their League campaign with a hard-fought victory over the Black & Whites, 0-28 to 2-15. Its now into knock out time for them in the championship and after wins in their last two games, the team should be well prepared for the task ahead.
