A number of emergency services including the Coast Guard and local RNLI crews are involved in the search.
The Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) at Malin Head is co-ordinating the search operation and confirmed the operation is ongoing.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said, “MRSC Malin are coordinating a search and Rescue operation off the Fanad peninsula, County Donegal this evening.
“The operation commenced at approximately 5pm and is ongoing.
“We have no further details at present.”
