A motorist involved in a crash in Co Kildare was arrested after they were found to be behind the wheel while intoxicated.

The Naas roads policing unit recently attended a crash in Kilcullen, Co Kildare.

At the scene, one motorist failed a roadside breath test for alcohol and was arrested.

Subsequent testing revealed that the driver was almost four times over the legal alcohol limit.

“This person made the decision to get behind the wheel while heavily intoxicated,” said a Kildare garda spokesperson. “They then ended up involved in a collision.

“It could have been a completely different outcome. It could have been a child crossing the road. It could have been a family travelling home. It could have been a pedestrian. It could have been you.

“There is nothing harmless about drink driving,” the spokesperson said. “It destroys lives, devastates families and leaves consequences that can last forever.

“If you drink, do not drive. There is no excuse, no justification, no second chance if you kill someone.”

The driver has been charged and will appear before the courts at a later date.
