The terrifying incident on Saturday afternoon horrified park-goers when the beast suddenly locked its powerful jaw on its caretaker’s legs.

Eyewitnesses at the Port Moresby park say the man was dragged into the murky water during a feeding session.

It is understood the park attraction regularly holds crocodile feeding demonstrations for visitors to watch where zoo workers routinely come into close contact with the animals.

Footage taken a few months before the deadly attack chillingly shows zoo staff getting dangerously close to the crocodiles with one clip showing a worker sitting on a croc’s back.

Bystanders desperately scrambled to free the man from the enclosure – including one who used a pole to beat the beast – but they were unsuccessful.

He was reportedly held captive for an hour until the cops were finally able to kill the animal.

Within that time the croc thrashed and rolled with the man in its jaws.

Police used a total of eleven bullets to down the killer croc.

The worker was rescued and rushed to 3 Mile General Hospital for treatment but sadly died from his injuries on Sunday morning.

Bystander, Koibuga Remdi, said the crocodile was extremely difficult to stop, causing the man to lose a significant amount of blood.

He said: “Many of us witnessed the incident, but unfortunately, there was very little we could do to help.

“Our only option was to call the police for assistance.

“When the police arrived, Adventure Park employees began pumping water out of the pond to make the rescue easier.

“‘Some workers said the crocodile had been living there since before Papua New Guinea’s independence and had never attacked the people who fed and cared for it.

“Sadly, today it unexpectedly turned on its caretaker.”

Park visitor Gibson John told ABC: “He brought the chicken to the fence and the crocodile attacked the person and tried to bring him into the pool.

“He was in severe pain but he couldn’t scream.”

Mr John said he could see the pain in the mans eyes.

He continued: “The only thing I could hear him say was, ‘I haven’t done anything wrong.”

In the wild a death roll is used to subdue, drown and then tear prey apart.

It is understood the worker had been at the park for around two years.

The park remains closed until further notice.

Authorities and park officials have yet to provide further details about the circumstances that led to the attack or whether any additional safety measures will be introduced before the attraction eventually reopens.
