When Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) turned up in Emmerdale and immediately set about making Jacob Sugden’s (Joe-Warren Plant) life an abject misery, fans went wild with theories.
One, in particular, linked Dr Todd with a truly heinous villain from years gone by; a devious, self-serving paedophile who nearly tore a family apart with her manipulation and depraved behaviour: Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein), who’d previously groomed and sexually abused an under-age Jacob, before the truth saw her sent off to the clink for her crimes.
Surely there had to be a reason that Todd was so viciously bullying poor, sweet Jacob, who’d done nothing other than display a genuine enthusiasm to learn and become the best doctor he could be?
There was also the mention of an unseen wife of Todd’s that added further fuel to the fire.
@emmerdale2dae took to X/Twitter at the time and said: ‘‘If the theories are true that Dr. Todd’s wife is Maya, I think I would genuinely freak out!!? What a twist this would be. Why else would Todd be so set on bullying and ruining Jacob? It’s all pointing in that direction. The symbolism would be CRAZY!’
Of course, Todd is now dead after her workplace bullying morphed into far more insidious behaviour; an insidious blackmail plot in which she targeted Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) before waiting until she was vulnerable and drunk and raping her: a final confrontation between the two ending with Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) shoving the demonic doctor and causing her to smash her head on a table.
So it looks like there’s no link between rapist Todd and paedophile Maya – or, if there is, we’ll never learn about it – but the actors behind the iconic villains recently posed for an Instagram post, sending fans back into a frenzy.
Louisa posted the snap to her feed, captioning it: ‘When Maya Stepney met Dr Caitlin Todd’ while also tagging the official Emmerdale account.
@darryljason posted a comment, saying: ‘This was the biggest “fan theory” that Dr Todd had something to do with Maya lol cause nobody could just sit and wait and watch to find out lol but great pic! I hope Maya comes back into Emmerdale sometime!’
@snugperks2021 backed him up: ‘that’s what I thought too, I thought it was Maya’s mum or aunt that she wanted to get revenge on Jacob’, while @miss_gemma_rafferty added: ‘I actually thought they would be mother and daughter.’
@kaylsoconnor95 said: ‘Soap villains assemble!’, while @darrenleehaywood added: ‘The stuff of Jacob’s nightmares’ and, speaking of Jacob, Joe-Warren Plant said: ‘Two of the best!’
Both of the villains continued to cause havoc for their enemies even after their departures: Charity is currently facing major legal repercussions after telling the police that it was her who shoved Todd and caused her death in a bid to protect Sarah.
With Sarah determined to tell the truth and exonerate her gran, Charity was forced to finally tell the truth after what felt like an eternity of lying: that the baby she carried and for Sarah is in fact the result of a drunken one night stand and not from an implanted embryo.
Maya, meanwhile, left her baby at Jacob’s door on Christmas Day, with both Jacob and his step-dad, David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden), unaware of which of them had fathered the child initially, after spending time in prison for her abuse of Jacob.
As it turned out, baby Theo was David’s, and he took the child in, taking him with him upon his own departure from the village a couple of years later.
