Gary Oldman has sent James Bond fans absolutely wild after appearing to let slip who the next 007 might be.
The hunt for the next James Bond has been well underway this summer, with Oldman’s Slow Horses co-star Jack Lowden among the contenders to be next in line to play the secret agent.
Well, he has backing from one of the greatest actors of a generation in Oldman, who said he had his ‘fingers crossed’ for the Scottish star.
‘It’s been rumored that he’s on the shortlist,’ he told Canada’s Global.
‘We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.’
Naturally, the Fifth Element actor’s comments have set Bond fans ablaze with equal excitement and confusion as it remains unclear if Oldman meant Lowden is the next Bond, if another actor has been confirmed, or if he’s just made the wrong assumption entirely.
All of which are entirely plausible.
Over on Reddit, wmcguire18 wrote: ‘Holy s**t, this isn’t an interpretation thing. He explicitly says they’ve picked their guy and we’re about to find out.’
Jokingsammy said: ‘I think he’s referring to Bond there and not Jack, but otherwise, Oldman just confirmed that Jack is Bond.’
‘I interpreted it as they’ve picked who Bond is going to be, but he doesn’t know who. But he hopes it’s Jack,’ replied RooMan7223, which got agreement from most others.
Over on X, others are taking Oldman’s word for it. Whoisarchie wrote: ‘reading in between the lines has me coming to the conclusion that Jack Lowden has been given the role.’
Oldman himself isn’t actually attached to the James Bond franchise himself so there could be absolutely nothing in it… or we really do have our next 007.
Auditions for Bond were said otherwise have been taking place throughout August, with Dune director Denis Villeneuve and casting director Nina Gold at the helm.
Joining Lowden as front-runners to be replacing Daniel Craig are Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jacob Elordi.
Though, should Amazon MGM follow tradition, it’s unlikely anyone so well known will need to aquire a taste for martinis, shaken not stirred.
Heartstopper actor Jack Barton emerged as the new favourite last week, with insiders telling Page Six, he’s ‘the one’.
Producer Amy Pascal, who has taken over from long-time Bond bosses Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson after Amazon MGM Studios paid $20,000,000 for creative contorl of the Bond franchise, recently revealed what she’s looking for in the next 007.
She told Deadline: ‘Having worked with Barbara Broccoli at the studio – I mean, Daniel Craig is a hard act to follow.
‘And it’s got to be something really different that is… stirring and exciting and different.’
She also suggested fans will have to wait until the end of 2026 before we get any official confirmation.
‘We are being really, really methodical,’ she stressed.
