Gardaí have warned Louth householders to take extra security measures to protect their tanks of home heating oil this winter.
They fear a possible increase in household oil thefts as the cost of fuel continues to skyrocket because of the war in Iran.
Gardaí warned: “With oil prices being quite high at present, it is worth looking at some preventative measures to avoid the theft of home heating oil.
“Try to arrange smaller but more frequent oil deliveries and check oil levels frequently.
“Install automatic movement-sensor security lighting around the tank and plant shrubs or fencing to screen tanks from the road.
“Install and use lockable access gates and consider fitting an alarm system which warns if the oil level drops suddenly.
“Be vigilant following a delivery and be aware that thieves may return to steal replacement oil following a theft.”
The Gardaí also recommend installing security lights with sensors near the oil tank and, if you are installing a new oil tank, having it installed as close to your house as possible.
They also said one of the cheapest ways to protect your oil is to install a strong padlock on the opening of your tank.
