Dundalk councillor says road in poor condition with no timeline for long promised Active Travel scheme
Resurfacing of the Dublin Road in Dundalk has remained in limbo for nearly six years, a meeting of councillors heard this week.
Speaking at the September meeting of Dundalk Municipal District, Cllr. Marianne Butler recalled the issue being raised “in 2019 or 2020” at which point it was confirmed that the resurfacing wasn’t scheduled because of an impending Active Travel project.
“I know that it was discussed five or six years ago as something that needed to happen. But we were told the it wasn’t happening because of an Active Travel project that was being planned for that area, which has now been put on a shelf.”
She sought an update on what the current plans are for the Dublin Road.
The meeting heard the road, which is one of the main routes into Dundalk town centre from the M1 motorway, remains in a bad state of repair.
Seperately Cllr. Shane McGuinness said residents from the Dunbin area off the Carrick Road had raised concerns about the road surface there. He asked if resurfacing was planned for this area.
A council spokesman said that it “was agreed” that the Dublin Road did need resurfacing, but it remains subject to the proposals for the Active Travel project.
The meeting heard that it is included on the council’s list of roads to be repaired, but it would be a “waste” to resurface the road, only for it to be dug up again in a few years.
In response to Cllr. McGuinness the spokesman said resurfacing is planned for a section of the Carrick Road in the coming weeks.
