London has experienced a balmy early autumn day on Sunday, with summer-like warmth making a brief return to the capital.
Parts of the city reached 27.9C around 3pm, thanks to a southerly wind which drew in a shot of hot and humid air from Europe.
Average temperatures for London in early September are typically between 15 and 21C.
Much of the rest of England and Wales has also seen temperatures in the mid-20s, while parts of central and southern Europe have been baked in intense heat, with some spots exceeding 45C.
On Thursday, Huelva in Spain reached a staggering 45.7C, as the country experienced its hottest day of 2026.
The warmth in the capital, however, will be short-lived according to upcoming forecasts.
Temperatures for the forthcoming week suggest highs in the low 20s, with the possibility of showers.
According to the Met Office, early sunshine on Monday will gradually give way to increasing clouds from the west, bringing a slight chance of an afternoon shower.
Tuesday seems set to be breezy with sunny spells, followed by a windy Wednesday and a dry Thursday, with light winds and hazy sunshine.
Longer term, the national forecaster suggests that London should expect some longer dry spells as we head toward mid-September.
Temperatures will probably be close to average overall, though still with some relatively cool nights at times.
