Wexford Camogie has announced that a number of their referees recently swapped the playing pitches for the classroom as they took part crucial CPR and first aid training.
The training was delivered by Niamh Roche from Roche Training who say their mission our mission is “simple yet profound” and is to equip individuals and organisations with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to ensure the safety and well-being of themselves and others.
“We firmly believe that a well-trained community is a safer community, and our training programs are designed to create lasting positive impacts on personal and professional lives.”
Wexford Camogie said it was a first-time experience for a number of their referees, and that being certified in CPR and first aid will give them a much greater knowledge and level of confidence should an emergency occur during a match.
“It was a fantastic, interactive evening, with Niamh taking the referees through CPR, first aid, defibrillator use, emergency response and practical role-play scenarios,” said Wexford Camogie PRO Corina Shiel.
“Our referees were excellent throughout the training, asking lots of questions, getting involved and making the most of the evening.
“And while our referees are normally the ones with the whistle in their hand, tonight they had the defibrillator in their hands.”
Wexford Camogie extended their sincere thanks to their referees who gave freely of their time to attend the training, in addition to already giving several evenings each week to officiate games.
They also recognised Niamh, describing her as an “excellent tutor,” who delivered the course so efficiently while keeping everyone engaged and involved throughout the evening.
In order to support the provision of the training, Wexford Camogie utilised the Volunteer Support and Club Training grant from Sports Active Wexford.
This grant is designed to support clubs in upskilling new and existing coaches and volunteers to increase participation in sport and physical activity. It aims to aid initiatives to increase participation in physical activity and sport, improve the management and administration of clubs and develop youth structures in clubs and organisations.
“Finally, we are extremely grateful to Sports Active in Wexford County Council for supporting this initiative and providing funding towards the running of the course. Their support has helped us make this important training available to our referees,” she added.
