However, it got off to a slow start with many viewers left dismayed at the opening scenes and insisted it wasn’t enough to keep them hooked.

From the outset, viewers saw 10 famous faces locked in yellow boxes in an unknown area.

With no clear opening premise, viewers took to X – formerly Twitter – in their droves to express their confusion and unhappiness with the show.

Writing online, one viewer said: “It’s not just the celebrities who don’t know what’s going on.”

Another added: “Definitely not my kind of show. Goodbye! Over to the athletics on bbc2.”

A third went on to write: “#thebox what fresh hell is this ? Nah.”

With a fifth writing: “Not off to a good start. Boring so far. Hope it improves pretty quickly.”

Whilst someone else chillingly predicted: “In two weeks “The Box” will be transferred from its peak time slot to a graveyard slot.”

Among the starry line-up are Good Morning Britian’s Ranvir Singh, The Chase star Jenny Ryan and Love Island star Shakira Khan.

JLS singer JB Gill, reality star Joey Essex, YouTuber Danny Aarons and new Strictly: It Takes Two host Ellie Taylor are also among the competitors.
