The shock factor comes simply from the lateness of the transfer, with the window already being shut for days.
Gboho, 25, has signed a five-year contract with Coventry and could make his debut against Manchester City today.
The club were able to complete the deal despite being 72 hours past the deadline due to a little-known rule.
The Daily Mail have reported that the deal was agreed before the 11pm deadline on September 1.

Gboho’s arrival will be a boost to Lampard and Coventry, who are yet to score in the Premier League this season.

Lampard will be hoping Gboho can make an immediate impact and help the Sky Blues cause a shock at the Etihad today.
