Pupils at Callystown National School in Clogherhead have been getting their school year off to an active start, with large numbers of children walking and cycling to class.
The school has welcomed the early success of its Safe Routes to School initiative, sharing its delight at seeing its bike parking bay filled with bicycles.
“Look at all those bikes! It is great to see so many children walking and cycling safely to school,” the school said.
Parents and guardians are being reminded that vehicles dropping children to school should use the car park at the AstroTurf rather than driving directly to the school gates.
Families can either drop children at Tony’s or use the AstroTurf car park, allowing pupils to complete the remainder of their journey to school safely.
The measures are aimed at reducing vehicle movements around the school entrance and creating a safer environment for children who walk and cycle.
There is also further good news for young cyclists, with Louth County Council planning to install a bike rack beside the AstroTurf.
Callystown NS thanked parents and the wider school community for supporting the arrangements.
“Thanks to everyone for their cooperation – a great start,” the school said.
The strong uptake comes as schools and communities across the country continue to encourage more children to walk, cycle and scoot to school where possible, while reducing congestion around school gates.
