Real Betis 1-0 Real Madrid

Republic of Ireland international Troy Parrott made it a home debut to remember for Real Betis with the match-winning goal against La Liga giants Real Madrid.

The Dubliner, who joined the Seville club from AZ Alkmaar last month, was the central figure as the hosts broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute at Estadio De La Cartujo.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a fantastic save to deny Pablo Fornals’ bullet of a header from a corner, but he could only parry it into the path of Parrott, who was quickest to react to fire home.

It looked as if Jose Mourinho’s side, who have begun the La Liga season with three straight wins, had rescued a point in the 87th minute when Carlos Espi found the back of the net with an acrobatic finish, but VAR deemed that Vinicius Junior had strayed offside.

Los Blancos had another glorious chance to earn a share of the spoils but Killian Mbappe missed a penalty in added time.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side held on to claim a famous win and move level with Madrid on nine points after four games to continue their impressive start to the season.
