A gaelic football club in Meath has paid tribute following the tragic passing of a player.
Conor Ahern from Athlumney Village, Navan passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Monday morning, 31 August 2026.
He is survived by his heartbroken mother Anne, father Daniel, brother David and his adored nephews Bobby and Theo. He will also be greatly missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and his wide circle of wonderful friends.
The local community has reacted with shock and grief, with an outpouring of tributes paid in memory of the popular man.
Simonstown Gaels GFC paid tribute to Conor, following the tragic news of his death.
“Simonstown Gaels GFC is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic passing of Conor Ahern on Monday,” the club stated.
“Conor came up through our underage ranks before rejoining the club recently at adult level, lining out with our Men’s 2nd and 3rd teams. Just last week, he was part of the team that helped secure a win away to Summerhill.
“Conor will be sorely missed by his teammates and friends throughout the club,” the club stated.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Ahern family at this incredibly difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
As a mark of respect to Conor and the Ahern family, the club’s 2nd and 3rd team championship matches due to be played this Sunday 6 and Monday 7 September have been postponed and will be rescheduled for next week.
Conor will repose at the family home on Sunday, September 6, from 3pm to 6pm. Transfer to the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady, Johnstown, Navan for Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, September 7, at 11am.
Conor will be laid to rest afterwards in Old Kilcarn Cemetery.
